Last time here, too bad.
This was my wife and I's favorite restaurant on the Island. No more. We went there first when they just opened about 4 or 5 years ago and it was magnificent. Beach seating, similar to Flying Fishbone ( I've been told, never been there) quiet, romantic, great food and worth the price.
Last time on the Island before last week was 2 years ago and we didn't go on that trip, so our last visit to OMATS was in 2010. The service in 2010 was a little poor, but our previous 3 times at the restaurant made me think we had a server issue. It's apparently a restaurant issue.
We arrived last Wednesday at 6pm for a sunset dinner. We were seated promptly, though they were still getting the tables set up (opens at 5).
Our waitress had such a terrible accent and was so quiet, I actually had to ask her to speak up. Our water was delivered at 6:15 and our drinks didn't arrive until 6:30 (got there at 6). A table of 12 arrived for their private island (which is very nice, we did that once before). I almost left then after seeing the large table show, seeing only 2 waitresses and one busboy and 5 other tables besides us, but my wife was again loving the atmosphere and she doesn't drink so wasn't bothered by the slowness. So we stayed.
Our appetizer was great, but came at 6:50. Meanwhile the other tables all seemed to be getting the same slow service.
Our order for dinner was taken at 7:20 which was the next time the waitress bothered to come by the table. My wife ordered the Trio which was a filet mignon, sauted shrimp (shreens) and lobster tail, I ordered the filet mignon. Our dinner didn't arrive until 8:30.
It was delicious, but with a total bill of almost $200 it's the last time I'll ever got there.
Now some will say "You can't rush through the dinner at a place like that" and I totally agree, however not being attended to for 30 minutes at a time is unacceptable. No drink refills, no water refills, no "hey sorry we understaffed tonight". All told our drink bill was 2 sparkling waters for her, 2 Beers for me and one glass of wine with dinner.
The food was great, no issues with that at all. But if I had employees like that waiting on my customers out front like they did there, I'd go out of business soon. I'm surprised this place is still open with the poor staff they have out front.
Next night we went to El Gaucho's and were there for 4 hours, we were attended well, great service and the food was again fantastic there. I didn't rush through that dinner, yet didn't feel ignored at all. OMATS needs an overhaul.
We went to the gazebo and got engaged, she said yes!! The food was great, the gazebo was magical, the service was perfect. Can't wait to go back.
Comparing old man and the sea and flying fish
We have been to both of these restaurants in Savaneta and have never been disappointed. Last year we had the gazebo as it was too windy to sit on the beach. I cannot decide which one of these restaurants is better. We are going back the first week in March and would love to hear reviews to help us make up our minds on which to choose this year.
We went yesterday (8 peoples)to try this beach dining, the decor was wonderful, the menu is small but everybody find his way so tastefull we took the snaper papaya(really excellent but a little bit salty) with lobster tail, filet mignon and the shrimp curried pinneaple were great too!! A small place to discover!
30th Anniversary Dinner
We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at Old Man and the Sea with 14 guests. We did a vow renewal there as well. All we can say is FABULOUS!!!!! Worked directly with Christian who designed a perfect menu to our liking. We had gone here when they first opened and enjoyed it very much but since there had been some not too great reviews and had not returned. We are so glad we did. We could not have asked for better food, service and ambiance. We had Rocky for our waiter and he could not have been better. He was actually running through the sand delivering our orders. We rented out the gazebo and it was decorated beautifully. All our guests (including one couple who live in Aruba) had not been here before but they all stated that it will be a MUST next time in Aruba. They even sent out cabs to pick all of us up at our resort - hassel free. Again, Thanks to Christian and our Rocky for a very special night with great friends, service and food.
Have eaten there on several occasions...Rocky is an excellent waiter...atmosphere and views are enjoyable.Food is okay.
We chose The Old Man and the Sea for our first dinner upon returning to Aruba, and were really happy! All the staff, especially our waiter Donald were most friendly and welcoming and we had a fabulous time, dining literally on the water on the private table on its own pier. We started dinner at sunset (spectacular colors) and enjoyed superb appetizers and entrees, all prepared with great creativity, flavors and style. The escargot stuffed mushrooms and scallops with risotto appetizers were especially good and all the seafood was fresh and delightful. The lobster tails served thermidor style got rave reviews!!. We did not have dessert as we were too full, unfortunately. All in all, we had a wonderful dinner and are looking forward to another visit.
I dare someone to find a better atmosphere on the entire island. Unbelievable view from this beachside restaurant at sunset. The Chilean Sea Bass was cooked to perfection! Great service... the drinks stayed full and you barely knew they were there - just what I'm looking for when I'm having a romantic and memorable dinner 10 ft off the water at sunset. It is a bit of a trip from most hotels/resorts but well worth the trip. There will never be a time we don't revist Old Man and the Sea when vacationing in Aruba. Perfect 10!
The view was spectacular, even though when we arrived, the place was empty and we had to insist on an outside table. The service was horrible from the start, like we were imposing on this poor blighted waiter. The menus state that grautity is not included, but appreciated, however our waiter wrote himself a 15% tip when he presented the bill. The only time he was the least bit frendly was when we were leaving. The prices were way out of line for the quality of the food. The Mai Mai was very dry and the rib eye was WELL DONE when we asked for MED. This is probably the highest priced, worst service restaurant on the island, and we have been coming to Aruba for a while. We will never be back and I do not recommend.
The food was not worth the price. The grouper was overcooked and dried out and the Filet was undercooked. Filet was requested well done and it was rare. Escargot with Angel hair was very good. Fried oreos dessert was very rich but good. Service was slow. There are much better places to eat in Aruba. If you are looking to eat on the beach go to FLying Fishbone instead of this place.
OK, we had had a great time in Aruba, our first time but my father-in-law had been there 15 odd times.
The restaurant is relatively new so it was a first for us all, so we were all excited. Wow the greeting we got from the waitress, (never came once to enquire about how our meal was getting on(owner?), her demeanor and the weird feeling we were putting her out was an alarm bell for me...
Food was ok, but they butchered the fish by cooking it for far too long and the vegetables seemed undercooked.
Been there done that, probably never go back as there are much better places to go, although the atmosphere was wonderful.
I took my wife to the old man and the sea and we were both overjoyed with the quality and the service in every way. I typically go twice a year to Aruba and this restaurant was by far the best one me and my wife has been to so far. And trust me we've been to pretty much all of them. For anyone reading this, don't just read the hype, I'm a chef and i've worked in many places in manhattan, this place is amazing. When in aruba, think of the old man.
This was my first visit to this restaurant after hearing a lot of good comments about this Romantic dinning restaurant from the locals , i am a fish lover and was told no frozen fih at this place onlu daily fesh catch of the day .my Fiancee form curacao visit for two weeks and i waited for the last day to come and have an romantic evening close to the water we were seated on the pier in the water very romantic she was very exited we had the dueling lobster and for me the catch of the day for me perfecttly delicious.desserrt we shared a fried oreos .we had a really romantic evening.
The best experience we had in Aruba. The food is excellent. Thumbs up for the chef!! We had grilled fresh lobster and the fresh broiled whole red snapper. service is very very good, very attentive. the place is beautifull and romantic, it should be included in the top restaurants of the caribbean. We travel a lot and we must say that it is the best experience. Worth the trip, worth every penny we spend! We will be back in december!
The food was ok. It wasn't worth the 150 bill. This was our last night and every other dinner we had was probably better, for less. The atmosphere was good. We were told about the place by another couple we met at happy hour. They said that the restaurant will send someone to pick you up and take you back since the place is in the middle of nowhere. Well they sent someone and he made us wait at another hotel and then we got there 15 minutes late and they made us pay for the cab ride home. Bottom line is a bill in excess of 180 for 2 people where we could spend half that and still have as much fun with better food.
The wife and I dinned here August 8, 2010. Very romantic setting. They have a private table setting (under cover) that you can rent for I believe 3 hours for an additional $100 US dollars. There is also another private setting that is not under cover that is also private called the pier. No extra cost to dine at this table but you must call in advance to reserve. This place is right next to The Flying Fishbone. I cannot remember what my wifes dish was called but it consisted of chicken, vegetables and pasta. The flavor was just ok and the chicken was VERY dry. I had the filet mignon. Ive cooked better filets than this one. It was served cold and the cut of the meat was fatty if you can believe that. Overall the setting is wonderful and possibly I had a bad cut of meat and the chief just didnt have it going on this night as I said before the wifes dish was just ok. The prices are on the higher side (two apps and two entrees with NO drinks plus the 15% added service charge was right around $100 US dollars). Next visit Id have to read more reviews and try their seafood selection. My understanding is this place is just around one year old.
El lugar super lindo super romantico un muy buen trato al cliente! La comida espectacular una tremenda presentacion! Y de los postres ni q desir! Recomiendo el banana foster y de comida el catch of the day con el papaya sauce!
My husband and I renewed our wedding vows for our 50th wedding anniversary. My husband, myself, children and granddaughter were there. The Old Man and the Sea did such a wonderful job. The food and service was excellent. Ihey made our special day perfect. We were on the private island which only added to the celebration. Also must thank Rev. Gibson who performed the ceramony. He made it very special!
Just came back from an amazing evening at The Old Man & The Sea.
Everything was in one word perfect.
You walk into a farytale when you come trough the door and it stops when you leave this amazing place.
The food was delicious, the service really friendly and professional.
We had nothing to complain and enjoyed ourselfs to the max!
We ate there last friday night. It was our last night in Aruba and we were looking forward to a special place. It turned into a frustrating evening. The setting is beautiful. Probably the nicest spot we have been to on the island. The food was fantastic. Two of us had filet mignons that may have been the best meat we had during the week. The service, however, was not good. We sat for 1 hour and 15 minutes before we got our appetizers. The servers did not come around more that twice during that time. Although the food was great and the place is beautiful I really could not recommend this restaurant to others.
We decided to try this restaurant as weve been to Flying Fishbone the past two years and must say the Old Man and the Sea is much better than Fishbone. My husband doesnt eat seafood so at both restaurants hes limited. He loved the pear and walnut salad appetizer and the chicken over penne entree. You cant go wrong with the fried Oreo dessert. Youre paying about a 20% premium for waterfront dining with excellent ambiance when compared to the finer inland restaurants.
Spent 2 lovely evenings there with Daryl as our server. Considering it was his first few nights as a "primary" server, he was great. Very friendly and accomadating to all this tables needs, plus a good photographer.
We were curious about the food after reading mixed reviews since last year, and both times it was very good, if not better. (We even decided to come back again with friends and rent the palapa.) We both had the escargot with angel hair pasta that we enjoyed so much, and shared the Concert for 2. All the meats were tender and cooked perfectly. The 2nd night, had the same appetizers, and we tried the special-red snapper thermidor and fish w/papaya sauce. It had a nice flavor with a little kick. It was wonderful way to end the day.
Probably one of the most romantci restaurant ever and I have traveled all over the world. Imgine sitting on a well-set table ...only that its on the beach , with sand under your feet, the waves hitting the end of the sand line. You can take a walk upto the water , wet your feet with the waves.. and return ...continue with your meal.Take your drink and walk on the sand. its secluded and the the sunset is amazing. The drinks are mixed just right, the food is excellent, seafood was fresh and well prepared, music soothing, service unrushed. You would want to come back again and again once you try this place out. Good for weddings and parties as well.
I just left this resturant about an hour ago with some of the best ladies in the world and the location and the service added to the night. We were given superb service and care. Smiles all around from the staff.
The food was presented very well. There was very little lag time in service. Glasses were always full...
I thought that Aruba would be a one time visit, but this resturant confirmed that I need to bring more people to this island to enjoy what I experienced this week and to see the view that I enjoyed while eating one of the best Salmon dishes I have ever enjoyed.
Our server Daryl J. (aka DJ) was awesome! Hope to see you again soon.
Danki and Cheers!!!
We ate at The Old Man this past weekend. The fish was great and our server Daryle was tremondous. We highly recommend dining here and we will return in October.
